Religious leadership - Servant Leadership

The second day of the Core Leadership Workshop began with a morning prayer service led by the Brothers from the Ghana Delegation. The reflection centered on the Gospel of John 13:1–17, which recounts Jesus washing the feet of His disciples—a powerful act symbolizing servant leadership.

At 9:00 a.m., the day continued with a session on Servant Leadership delivered by Brother Nee Wayoe Bertrand of the Congregation of the Brothers of the Holy Cross. He encouraged participants to embrace a leadership style rooted in service and participation—one that fosters collaboration, inclusivity, and synodality. Drawing inspiration from Luke 22:26, he reminded the group that “the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves.”

Participants then broke into small groups to discuss the qualities of effective leaders, both religious and secular, as well as the traits that are generally considered undesirable in leadership.

In the afternoon, Mr. Willy Bastian, who has served for decades as Secretary of the FIC General Council, led a dynamic session. He shared his extensive experience and insights on the practical aspects of his role within the General Secretariat, offering valuable lessons for the attendees.

The day concluded with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Father Charles, SMM. In his homily, Father Charles reaffirmed that religious leadership is fundamentally about service, echoing the example set by the congregation’s founders, Bishop Louis Rutten and Brother Bernardus Hoecken.
