INMEMORIAM
Nancy Clare Mugo'S Tribute to Br. Augustine Kubdaar

MY TRIBUTE TO BR. AUGUSTINE KUBDAAR

(People Like You)

I met Brother Augustine in 2015 at the Loreto Convent, Nairobi, when I was a second-year novice and he was pursuing his studies at SIU–Kenya.

Br. Augustine Kubdaar was a person whose life spoke quietly but powerfully. Through his words, actions, and example, he showed what it truly means to live with humility, dedication, and genuine care for others. He never sought recognition, yet his presence left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

I experienced him as a brother and a mentor who believed deeply in forming and sustaining friendships, regardless of status, age, race, or gender. He carried this openness with a profound sense of humour that made him approachable and deeply human.

I vividly remember one table conversation at the Loreto Convent Novitiate when Br. Augustine remarked to my Novice Director, “It would be nice to send Nancy to Ghana for her mission after the novitiate. She has an open heart—that is all the mission in Ghana requires of a missionary.”

I was excited to hear such an affirming statement, yet worried at the same time, wondering how quickly Augustine could arrive at such a conclusion after a first encounter. Indeed, that moment marked the beginning of a prophetic and lasting friendship. True to his word, in 2016 I received my first appointment to work in the Catholic Diocese of Obuasi, Ghana—a mission that lasted six years. Needless to say, all that was required was a spirit of love and service.

Upon reporting to the mission in Ghana, I jokingly baptized him “a prophet of doom.” With laughter and joy, he welcomed me through a friendly phone call that lasted for hours. In that moment, I realized that I was safely home on a mission with a brother who promised me nothing but prayerful support—and he remained faithful to that promise throughout our ten years of friendship.

Through his constant reminders and personal example, I learned from Br. Augustine a deep love for the People of God, service to humanity, generosity, sacrifice, perseverance, and many other virtues. I shall forever remember his powerful reflections on life, which I quote below:

  • “I commit myself to pray, read, and listen.”
  • “Religious men and women should give birth by taking care of nature.”
  • “Positions don’t matter… service does.”
  • “Have a friend who shall love you in life and remember you even in death.”
  • “The tragedy of life is to die having not lived.”
  • “It shall be well… it shall be well.”
  • “We are together in this.”
  • “Pray for me.”

As a psychologist, Br. Augustine had a remarkable ability to appeal to the mind, guiding others toward sound decisions and humane living. As a friend, he generously introduced me to his close companions—Br. Kennedy of the Holy Cross Brothers, a fervent friend and confidant, Br. Nimo, and other brothers in the Nandom Community and in the Netherlands.

As a religious, he loved his community, the Church, and the institute he served, remaining faithful and diligent to the very end. As a leader, he listened without judgment, encouraged without pressure, and corrected with understanding. Even in moments of his own suffering and distress, his calm reassurance brought comfort and hope. He repeatedly assured me, “It shall end well. Pray for me.”

Br. Augustine Kubdaar’s legacy is not confined to memory alone; it lives on in the values he instilled and in the lives he touched. May his life continue to remind us that true greatness is found in serving others.

As I bid farewell to my friend today, a song by Gramps Morgan remains my sole dedication to you, Br. Augustine—“People Like You.”

Rest easy, my friend, brother, and mentor. I miss you now, and I shall forever cherish the beautiful memories we shared in Nairobi, Sunyani, and Nandom. Sleep well, my friend.
