01.02.2015 07:17:34 982x read. NEWS Flood Victim Support in Malawi. Most of the Brothers FIC in Malawi we are teachers. Therefore, we don't normally do fundraising, we normally help to provide good education to the marginalized and vulnerable people; the poor, the sick, the deaf, the blind, orphans. We run both primary and secondary school for normal students and students with special needs. These institutions are not for profit enterprises which create local jobs for Malawians.
But this the month of January 2015 has not been normal for Malawi; torrential rain is destroying homes and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by flooding. Apart from being homeless the biggest problem for many is access to clean water, as drinking water sources have been contaminated and the prospect of disease spreading is huge.
Loss of food items has aggravated the problem. The FIC Provincial Council in Malawi has made available K200,000.00 (about €400) to each of our four communities so that we can help with food items. Unfortunately, this help is far from being adequate.
Our Mary View FIC community has direct contact with many local vulnerable families who need help right now. Our maintenance team are ready to help with building simple houses and keep people dry. Our CARITAS women (32 women volunteers who undertake Home Based Care in the local communities) are ready to help the most needypeople through distributing food items, clothing, blankets, buckets, plastic sheets, blankets and water purification tablets. We need your help to pay for vital materials and resources to help our team on the ground. 100% of all funds received will directly benefit the most vulnerable in villages surrounding the Brothers Mary View Community.
Lidia is a 40 year old, a single lady, a mental patient who regularly receives help from the Brothers. “Brothers help me please, my house has just collapsed. I am now homeless!” This was about midnight, I could also hear the sound of heavy rain on our roof. Lidia came to us soaked in the rain. She sounded confused and desperate.
Lidia had a simple mud house and now she is homeless. Being a mental patient, Lidia has no source of income which worsens her situation. In the days when her illness quietens down Lidia is willing to do some work for some little money.
Please help us to help vulnerable families like Lidia’s, every penny will help and our brothers will make sure that every penny received gets to where it is needed most.
Please send your donation to the Brothers FIC General Council. |
