Religious Jubilees: An Occasion for Contemplation, Commemoration, and Expressing Gratitude to God

After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing (Luke 5:4-6).

Jubilees in the religious life are significant milestones that must be celebrated with joy and gratitude.

As we mark the jubilees of a number of our brothers in the various provinces, it will be an excellent time for everyone of us to reflect on the commitment we have made and sustained for so many years. It is appropriate for us to ask ourselves a number of questions about our religious life and consecration.

How and why did we decide to commit to this in this way of life in the first place? Have our motivations for joining the religious life to serve God changed? Have our motivations matured over the years? Do we have a clearer perspective on life now than when we first professed the evangelical counsels of obedience, chastity and poverty?
