The Catholic Diocese of Wa has its new Bishop (Most Rev. Richard Kuuia Baawobr) ordained and installed yesterday the 7th of May, 2016 in the Wa sports stadium. His Holiness, Pope Francis appointed the then Fr. Richard Kuuia Baawobr (M. Afr.) who was the General Superior to the Missionaries of Africa to replace Most Rev. Bishop Paul Bemile who reached his retirement age.
The five hour ceremony was attended by Bishops, priests and religious including traditional rulers and the lay faithful of the church. The guest of honour was the vice president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur. His Eminence, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson (President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in the Vatican) was the main celebrant. Nature graced the occasion with a heavy down pour of rain the previous night making it possible for the congregation to sit in the open air without canopies.
Delivering the sermon, His Grace, Bishop Philip Naameh (Bishop of the Arch-Diocese of Tamale) expressed sentiments of gratitude to the past Bishops of the Diocese and called on the 4th ordained Bishop to be a shepherd to all people irrespective of their religious denominations. He condemned the religious syncretic tendencies of some Christian politicians and others who profess the Catholic faith. He backed his claim by referring to the latest satiric song composed by the people to ridicule those Christians who visit deities for spiritual fortification with rosaries on their necks.
