Strengthening Brotherhood Through Communication

Strengthening Brotherhood Through Communication

Bro. Martin Handoko, FIC

The General Chapter FIC 2024 wisely entrusted the General Council 2024–2030 with the crucial task of promoting communication within the Congregation. This mandate, based on Resolution-8, acknowledges that effective communication is not simply a tool — it is a bridge that connects hearts, minds, and shared mission. In a Congregation enriched by diversity, such as family backgrounds, ethnicities, nationalities, cultures, and educational experiences, communication becomes the thread that weaves unity from differences.

Research and lived experience confirm that communication is essential for success, both for individuals and groups. Alongside collaboration and creativity, it underpins any meaningful effort. Without a robust and inclusive communication system, even the most inspired programmes risk failure. Communication fosters transparency, builds trust, and enables shared understanding — all vital for nurturing the spirit of internationality and brotherhood that the FIC Congregation aims to embody.

For members of the FIC religious congregation, communication is not merely a strategy but a sacred practice — one that honours our shared mission and celebrates the richness of our global community. We recognise that our Congregation is divided into provinces, and each province comprises several communities. Our Congregational unity is a unity in diversity. Dialogue, mutual contact, and frank deliberations are essential for the unity, the upbuilding, and the functioning of the Congregation (cf. Const. Art. 41, 43)

I have come to truly value the significance of communication, especially during my tenure as Superior General of the Congregation from 2006 to 2018. My experiences have shown me that many issues within our Congregation stem from ineffective communication. I strongly believe we must continually promote communication at all levels — both within the congregation and between individuals.

Institutional Communication

In this section, I would like to share our efforts to develop several programs aimed at enhancing institutional communication. Among these initiatives were:

• General Conference: Designed to strengthen the sense of unity among brothers and provinces.

• FIC Journey to Spiritual Enrichment: A program centred on reflection and faith-based communication.

• Formators Meeting: A platform for exchanging ideas and experiences related to formation.

• Annual Congregational Conference: A special meeting between the General Council and Provincial Superiors to foster dialogue and shared vision.

• Congregational Website: A platform designed to inform and inspire, offering updates, reflections, and resources.

  • FIC Photobook (CD and booklet): A visual compilation showcasing all brothers and associated members
  • Bimonthly Congregational News Bulletin (Information General Council): Regular updates from the General Council to keep all members informed.

• Yearbook: A comprehensive directory containing data on all brothers and associated members.

• Circular Letters: Sent to the entire Congregation at least once a year, addressing key themes and developments.

• Pastoral Letters for Each Province: Typically issued following the General Council’s visitation, offering guidance and encouragement.

• Congregational Magazine: Published twice annually, featuring articles, reflections, and news from across the Congregation.

• Booklets with the following topics:

• Finance and Administration Manual (2014)

• Prayers Before and After Meetings (2015)

• Core Curriculum for Initial Formation (2016)

• OASIS 2017: Fruitful, Intensive, Commitment (2018)

• A Training Module on Financial Management for Candidates and Juniors (2018)

Interpersonal Communication

Besides communication at the institutional level, we also aimed to enhance and strengthen our interpersonal communication. This is truly the most vital and immediate form of communication, as it embodies the core value of our being religious brothers. Our Constitution states that “we are directed towards the happiness of our fellow beings, firstly towards the happiness of those with whom we form a community (cf. Const. art. 36).” Forming a community means to be near one another, willing to understand, appreciate, encourage, and inspire one another again and again (cf. Const. art. 37). In an increasingly fragmented world, the need for unity and mutual understanding within communities has never been more critical. At the centre of this unity lies a simple yet powerful tool: interpersonal communication. Much more than casual conversation, it is the essence of human connection and the foundation upon which brotherhood is built. The following are key points to enhance interpersonal communication among our community members.

  • Building Trust Through Dialogue

Trust is the foundation of any strong community. When individuals engage in open and honest communication, they foster an environment of transparency and reliability. This trust enables people to feel safe expressing themselves, knowing they will be heard and respected. Over time, these interactions nurture a sense of loyalty and mutual dependence—key elements of brotherhood.

  • Cultivating Empathy and Understanding

Interpersonal communication enables individuals to step into each other’s shoes. Through active listening and heartfelt conversations, people begin to understand each other's emotions, struggles, and aspirations. This empathy breaks down barriers and fosters compassion, enabling diverse community members to connect on a deeper level.

  • Strengthening Social Bonds

Communities flourish when their members experience a sense of belonging. Regular interpersonal exchanges—whether via community meetings, informal chats, or collaborative projects—help bridge cultural, generational, and ideological divides. These interactions strengthen shared values and create a cohesive social fabric where everyone feels included.

  • Encouraging Growth and Support

Brotherhood is not just about unity; it’s also about uplifting one another. Interpersonal communication provides a platform for sharing knowledge, offering encouragement, and resolving conflicts constructively. It empowers individuals to grow personally while contributing to the community's collective progress.

  • Facilitating Cooperation and Shared Goals

Effective communication is essential for collaboration. Whether organizing events, resolving local issues, or pursuing development initiatives, communities rely on clear and respectful dialogue to coordinate efforts. This cooperation transforms individual actions into collective achievements, strengthening the bonds of brotherhood.

  • Combating Isolation and Division

In a digital age where isolation is common, interpersonal communication serves as a remedy. It reconnects people through face-to-face interactions, shared experiences, and mutual support. Fostering genuine relationships helps prevent social fragmentation and nurtures a resilient, united community.

Conclusion

Institutional communication is more than just a formal exchange of information—it is the strategic heartbeat of an organization’s relationship with its stakeholders. When executed effectively, it fosters transparency, trust, and engagement, enabling institutions to align their goals with the needs of the community. By promoting open dialogue, clarifying policies, and responding to concerns, institutional communication becomes a powerful tool for building social cohesion and a shared sense of purpose. In essence, it transforms institutions from distant entities into active participants in community life, reinforcing unity and the spirit of brotherhood across diverse groups.

Interpersonal communication is more than just exchanging words—it’s about building bridges, nurturing empathy, and creating a shared sense of purpose. When communities prioritize meaningful dialogue, they lay the groundwork for a spirit of brotherhood that can withstand challenges and inspire collective growth. In essence, communication is not just a tool—it’s the heartbeat of a united community.
