Onze congregatie werd in 1840 gesticht door Ludovicus Rutten. Deze jonge priester voelde zich geroepen, heel zijn leven en al zijn middelen in dienst te stellen van de christelijke opvoeding en vorming van de jeugd. Zijn eerste aandacht ging uit naar de arme en verwaarloosde jeugd in zijn geboortestad Maastricht, waar de sociale toestanden in die tijd uitermate slecht waren.

In 1840 werd Bernardus Hoecken de eerste overste van de eerste communiteit van onze congregatie. Zelf was hij toen nog novice; zijn huisgenoten waren aspiranten. In 1842 behoorde hij tot de eerste broeders die hun geloften aflegden. Vele jaren heeft hij naast Rutten leiding gegeven aan de groeiende gemeenschap.

Evenals bij Rutten ging zijn apostolische voorkeur uit naar gelovige opvoeding en vorming. Sterk heeft hij erop aangedrongen, dat de broeders de armen nooit uit het oog zouden verliezen.

 Vincentius:

 ‘Een arme mag ik niet beoordelen naar zijn uiterlijk of verstandelijke ontwikkeling. Door hun ruwheid, hun fysieke en intellectuele capaciteiten slaan ze maar een pover figuur. Maar draai de medaille om. In het licht van het geloof zie je de Zoon van God die arm wilde zijn en die in de armen schuil gaat.

 Wees ervan overtuigd dat je er niets bij verliest wanneer je het gebed of de eucharistie moet verlaten om naar de armen te gaan, want je gaat naar God toe als je de armen gaat dienen en in hun persoon moet je God zien.

 Wij en de anderen moeten de armen helpen in hun materiële en spirituele nood, op alle mogelijke wijzen. Dit is evangeliseren met woord en daad.

 Zelfs wanneer je niets zegt, maar in jezelf met God bezig bent, zul je door de aanwezigheid en je “zijn” het hart van de mensen raken.’

Our Congregation was founded in 1840 by Father Louis Rutten. This young priest felt a call to place his whole life and all his means in the service of the christian education and formation of the young.
His first concern was for the poor and neglected youth in his native town ofMaastricht, where, at the time, the social conditions were extremely bad.

In 1840 Bernardus Hoecken became the first superior of the Congregation's first community. He himself was then still a novice ; his fellow-brothers were aspirants. In 1842 he was among the first brothers who took their vows. For many years he guided the growing community, together with Father Rutten.
Just as Father Rutten he felt an apostolic preference for christian education and formation. He strongly urged the brothers never to lose sight of the poor.

Vincentius:

 ‘I should not judge the poor after their appearance or education. With their ruggedness, physical and intellectual capacities they cut a poor figure. But suppose you would turn it around. In the light of faith you will see the Son of God, who wanted to be poor and is hidden in the poor.

 Be convinced that you lose nothing when you have to leave prayer or Holy Mass to go to the poor, for you are going to God when you serve the poor, and you should see God in them.

 We and others should help the poor in their material and spiritual need, in every possible way. This is true evangelizing.

 Even when you do not speak, but are with God inside yourself, your presence and “being” will touch the hearts of the people.’

Kongregasi kita didirikan pada tahun 1840 oleh Pastor Ludovicus Rutten. Imam muda ini mengalami suatu panggilan untuk menyerahkan seluruh hidupnya dan semua kekayaannya bagi pelayanan pendidikan dan pembinaan Kristiani kaum muda. Ia terutama memberikan perhatian kepada kaum muda yang miskin dan telantar dikotakelahirannya,Maastricht, yang pada waktu itu kondisi sosialnya amat sangat buruk.

Pada tahun 1840, Bernardus Hoecken menjadi pemimpin pertama komunitas pertama kongragasi kita. Pada waktu itu, dia sendiri masih seorang novis, sedang teman-teman sekomunitasnya masih berstatus sebagai calon bruder (aspiran). Pada tahun 1842, dia termasuk bruder pertama yang mengucapkan prasetia mereka. Bertahun-tahun lamanya, dia bersama Pastor Rutten memimpin persekutuan yang semakin berkembang. Sama seperti Pastor Rutten, dia merasa bahwa prioritas kerasulan adalah pendidikan dan pembinaan Kristiani. Dengan tegas dia mendesak para bruder agar tak pernah melalaikan orang miskin.

Vincentius:

Saya tidak boleh mengadili para orang miskin berdasarkan apa yang kelihatan dan tingkat pendidikan mereka. Dengan perilaku laku kasar, keadaan fisik dan kemampuan mereka, mereka nampak sebagai sosok dalam keadaan miskin.

Tetapi cobalah melihat dari sisi yang lain. Dalam terang iman engkau melihat Putra Allah yang mau menjadi miskin dan tinggal tersembunyi dalam para orang miskin.

Percayalah bahwa engkau tidak dirugikan jika engkau terpaksa meninggalkan doa dan Perayaan Ekaristi demi melayani para orang miskin dan engkau harus melihat Allah dalam diri mereka Kami dan yang lainnya harus membantu kebutuhan material dan spirituil para orang miskin dengan segala cara. Inilah pewartaan Kabar Gembira yang sesungguhnya.

Bahkan jika engkau tidak berbicara, tetapi menyadari bahwa Allah berada dalam dirimu,  kehadiran dan keberadaan-mu menyentuh hati orang-orang itu.
