In het evangelie leren wij Jezus kennen. Hij toont ons, hoe een mens is die Gods opdracht ten volle vervult. Hij leert ons zorgzame liefde voor heel de schepping. Hij wordt alles voor allen. Hij heeft aandacht voor menselijke nood en een voorkeur voor armen en zwakken. Hij, de Zoon van God, brengt ons bij die armen en zwakken. En omgekeerd: als wij de armen en zwakken zoeken, brengen zij ons bij Jezus Christus, bij God.

In het evangelie zoekt Vincentius voor alles de ontmoeting met de levende persoon Jezus. Zijn ervaringen doen hem naar het evangelie grijpen, om zich te spiegelen aan de reacties van Jezus.

Vincentius: ‘Als we leven vanuit de geest van Jezus Christus is er in de Schrift geen enkel woord waaruit men geen nut kan trekken. Eén woord is voldoende om iemand te veranderen, wanneer het geproefd en gesmaakt wordt in de gezindheid die God vraagt.’

Vincentius is een man van actie, geen theoreticus. Hij laat het evangelie aansluiten op zijn dagelijks leven en leest het vanuit zijn visie. Hij is vooral getroffen door de keuze van Jezus voor de armen en de marginalen van zijn samenleving.

Vincentius: ‘Het evangelie zegt: gelukkig, jij die arm bent, en de wereld zegt: gelukkig wanneer je rijk bent. Het evangelie zegt dat je zacht en mild moet zijn. De wereld zegt dat je hard moet zijn, opdat men je vreze.’

In de bergrede zijn de waarden omgekeerd: de arme is er heer en meester. Geleidelijk aan brengt Vincentius zijn tijdgenoten ertoe te gaan leven vanuit de geest van de bergrede. Hij brengt mensen bij elkaar, hij brengt mensen ertoe eerbied te hebben voor elkaar.

Vincentius bezat een grote soepelheid het evangelie aan te voelen. Daarom staan er in zijn geschriften 400 bijbelcitaten en meer dan duizend verwijzingen naar de Bijbel.

‘Hou je dicht bij het evangelie en volg alleen de Heer na. Wees niet ontmoedigd als je niet dadelijk door de tekst wordt aangesproken, ook al heb je hem verschillende malen herlezen. Het kan soms één maand, twee of zes maanden duren, totdat je opeens een lichtje ziet. Eén enkel woord kan genoeg zijn om je te bekeren.’

In the Gospel we come to know Jesus. He reveals to us the image of the man who fulfils God's mission to the fullest. He teaches us caring love for the whole of creation. He becomes all things for all people. He looks towards human needs and has a primary concern for the poor and the needy. He, the Son of God, leads us to those poor and needy; and conversely, when we seek the poor and the needy, they will lead us to Jesus Christ, to God.

In the Gospel Vincent first of all longs to meet the living person of Jesus. His experiences make him seize for the Gospel, to follow the reactions of Jesus.

Vincent: ‘If we live in the spirit of Jesus Christ there is not a word in the Scriptures that cannot benefit us. One word is enough to change a person, if it is sampled and tasted in the inclination God desires.’

Vincent is a man of action, not a theorist. He connects the Gospel with his daily life and reads it from his vision. He is especially touched by Jesus’ choice for the poor and marginalised of society.

‘The Gospel says: blessed are you who are poor, and the world says: blessed are you when you are rich. The Gospel says one has to be gentle and mild. The world tells you to be tough, so you will be feared.’

In the Sermon on the Mount the values are turned around: the poor is lord and master Gradually Vincent brings his contemporaries to live in this spirit. He brings people together and teaches them to have esteem for each other.

Vincent was very flexible in appreciating the Gospel. In his writings there are 400 quotes from the Bible and more than a thousand references to Bible texts.

‘Stay close to the Gospel and only follow the Lord. Do not be discouraged if the text does not appeal to you at once, even when you read it several times. Sometimes it takes a month, two or six months before you suddenly see a light. One single word can be enough to convert you.’

Di dalam Injil, kita dimungkinkan mengenal Yesus. Ia mengungkapkan kepada kita citra manusia yang memenuhi tugas yang diberikan oleh Allah secara sempurna. Ia mengajar kita mencintai seluruh ciptaan. Ia menjadi segala-galanya bagi semua orang. Ia memperhatikan kebutuhan manusia dan mempunyai perhatian utama bagi yang miskin dan yang berkekurangan. Ia, Putra Allah, membimbing kita kepada yang miskin dan yang berkekurangan, dan sebaliknya, mereka akan mengantar kita kepada Yesus Kristus, kepada Allah.

Dalam injil, Vincentius berusaha menemukan semua perjumpaan dengan pribadi Yesus yang hidup. Pengalamannya mengajarkan agar dalam memahami injil, bercermin kepada reaksi-tanggapan-tindakan- Yesus.

Vincentius: ‘Jika kita hidup dari roh Yesus Kristus dan Kitab Suci, tak ada sepatah kata pun yang keluar dari seseorang yang tak memberikan manfaat.

Sepatah kata sudah cukup untuk mengubah seseorang, jika dicicipi dan dinikmati dalam semangat-mentalitas- seperti yang diminta Yesus.’

Vincentius seorang pelaksana, bukan teoriticus. Dia membiarkan injil memenuhi hidupnya sehari-hari, dan membacanya sesuai pemahamannya. Ia terutama tersentuh atas pilihan Yesus terhadap yang miskin dan terpinggirkan dari kehidupan bersama.

Vincentius: ‘Injil mengatakan: berbahagialah kamu yang miskin, dan dunia mengatakan: berbahagialah bilamana kamu kaya. Injil mengatakan bahwa kamu harus lemah lembut dan murah hati dan dunia mengatakan kamu harus keras-tegas-, sehingga orang takut kepada mu.’

Di bukit sabda bahagia nilai-nilai dijungkir-balikkan: yang miskin itu tuan dan penguasa. Pelang-pelan Vincentius menyampaikan kepada sesamanya untuk hidup dari roh sabda bahagia. Dia mempersatukan orang, untuk saling menghormati satu terhadap yang lain.

Vincentius memiliki kesupelan yang besar terhadap pemahaman Injil. Maka dalamcatatannya ada 400 kutipan Kitab Suci, dan lebih dari 1000 rujukan kepada Kitab Suci.

‘Berpeganglah erat kepada Kitab Suci dan kemudian ikutlah hanya kepada Tuhan. Jangan takut karena teks yang tidak jelas dikatakan, juga jika kamu sudah berkali-kali membacanya kembali. Kadang-kadang bisa sebulan, dua atau enam bulan berlangsung, sampai suatu ketika kamu melihat sinar kecil.

Sepatah kata sudah cukuplah membuat kamu untuk bertobat’.
